Possibly my favorite speculative fiction writer. He has delved more deeply into the concept of identity in a post-human world than any author I can think of. Heady stuff to be sure.

What if You could run your personality on something OTHER than the wetware you were born with. Do you need to be “born” of a womb to be human?

If you could download yourself to another substrate, then what would slowing down your clockrate seem like (subjectively and objectively), what about multiple copies of “you”, reintegration of multiples? The list goes on and on.

Ok, so i know he is no longer with us but he has had a huge impact on my life. The man can tell a damn good story and his science fiction is not overly dependent on the science—technology is secondary to story telling which is the way it should be. If I want pure tech, I’ll read a whitepaper.

The robots came in peace. They were the last vestiges of a dead race and they carried in their silicon hearts the memories and dreams of those that built them.

It was the last wish of the last creator that the robots would go forth and tell the Universe how the creators had come to destroy themselves through hate and suspicion.

Unfortunately, they came to Earth, landed in the U.S. and were subsequently detained by the Department of Homeland Security.

Luckily, robots last a long time so for now they bide their time, sitting in their cells, every now and then chuckling to themselves.
